As always, our learners continue to explore and conquer new skills, tasks, and activities. Here are some highlights of recently: parallel peer play sensory exploration Learning to draw! Discovering new equipment during PE With the new season upon us, many of our art activities have included a "winter" theme: The second letter in the acronym of our program's title is "S" (for SENSORY). Each kiddo is most successful under their own specific self-regulation routines; however, there is one universal strategy we have found that recently has proven very helpful as a movement break for most of our students. Check it out, our very own Bouncy House! For the month of December our students will have access to this a movement break choice.  Reminders Monday, November 27th: Creative Movement Unit Begins Popcorn Days November 28th & 29th Paint Nite Fundraise November 30th Movie Nite December 1st, 7pm PD Day December 8...

What a productive couple of weeks! Recently, we added a new activity to our morning meeting. As a class, we have begun to "sign in" each morning using our Smart Board. Each student is responsible for finding their names and dragging their photo under "here."  We have also added some new activities during our afternoon center time and our sensory bins have been a class favourite right before home time: Some other additional centers we have added include our Reading Center where our students can choose either "Read to Self" or "read me a story" (reading with our staff). Some Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) we have been using to support this center are included below: As always, the use of appropriate and functional communication is something we continue to support and promote in our classrooms each and every day. With some time designated to play and leisure skills built in to our daily schedules, this also doubles as a gre...

With week 7 complete we have really begun to notice growth in each of our students as they work towards individual goals. As the year continues we continue to celebrate daily successes: requesting preferred activities  imitation skills creative play (our very own fidget spinner!) more sorting skills (by class) Physical Education integration Eating snack together! This week, we changed up our alphabet song at our morning meeting. By selection of one of our own kiddos, we are watching an ASL version of the song and attempting to practice finger spelling: ASL Phonics Song This week we changed our transition song to a favourite song from our Music time with our Specialist, Mrs. B. A few of our students have really picked up on the song and many of our Grade 1s and 2s have really been loving to participate along with the actions! One Little Finger Wednesday morning we had our first Lockdown practice of the school y...

I hope you all had a fantastic Turkey Weekend, and most of all enjoyed the wonderful weather! We've been very busy the last few days in CSSI, especially as we continue to push ourselves at group times. Today we created a small "sensory wall" together (that also functioned as a great colour sort)!  Almost all of our kiddos participated in the creation of it. We used materials of different textures, size, and shape to develop it.  As promised, here are photos from last week's art project, our fall handprint murals: Go Flames Go!   In support of our Fundraising Association for the playground, please see attached flyer for a chance to cheer on the Flames at one of three upcoming games:   CBE Flames Student Nights.pdf   Reminders Jacket Racket begins today! Oct 16th: No School – PD Day Oct 18th: Picture Day Oct 25th & 26th: Popcorn Day  Oct 31st: Happy Halloween

The snow is here!

Just a friendly reminder that with the snowfall this week, and the upcoming winter, it is recommended that you send your child with indoor shoes. Thank you!

What a busy week of learning (and fun!) Take a look at our students and some of their recent work and accomplishments: Creating balloons (numbered 1 through 22) Sorting practice at task time Matching upper and lower case letters Labelling with our 'words'! We are currently reading "Good Morning Canada," an Andrea Lynn Beck book that talks about animals and activities common in our country. As a whole group we spend time labelling beaver, moose, goose, hockey, snow, etc., that we see each morning in the book.   Terry Fox Run Today was our school Terry Fox Run and many of our students were able to join all of our Kenneth D. Taylor students outside to run laps in support of the cause. Together we were able to complete over  12  laps!   Watch out next week for photos of our hand-print mural making! Reminders: The School Council / Fundraising Association meeting will take place on  Wednesday October 11, 6...

What a fabulous beginning to the school year! We have been working hard to solidify and generalize our routines and transitions across all of the spaces we access, and are very excited about the progress each and every one of the students is making already. Although it’s only been three weeks we have seen our CSSI kiddos come so far with their personal adjustments back into the school year. Take a peek at the “A is for Apple Song” with your child at home. We listen to it every morning at our morning circle.  A class favourite, this song is a great way to continue our alphabet exposure : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPVbJ-IaHIw   During our morning table activities we have seen lots of sharing and positive peer interaction, especially at our play centre. We have been working on specific play skills with multiple toys and activities. Here are four of the kiddos at the car ramp together: We have also seen lots of success with “Visual Performance...
